Ego means one's self, self esteem, self importance without which no one can survive.

No. we need our ego waffles. We eat them every day, every moment. They are so delicious that we really have no idea how delicious they are. But we eat them and will go on eating them throughout our life.

Do not let go of your ego unless you want to die.

While the ego serves a purpose in our psychological development, some spiritual and psychological practices suggest that it is possible to transcend the ego or reduce its influence. Living without the ego may involve letting go of excessive attachment to self-image, desires, and fears, leading to a greater sense of interconnectedness and peace. However, it is a complex and challenging process that requires deep self-awareness and inner work.

What are the primary functions of ego defense mechanism?

We can't live without our ego. If our ego is hurt, the whole psychosomatic machine collapses and we need to resurrect. This will take a long time once again to survive. So Nature has given us something called ego defense mechanism. With the help of this mechanism, we can protect our ego from being destroyed. Avoidance, blame, aggression, criticism, etc. are some of the common actions by which we defend our ego.

What if we can erase a human's ego?

The ego is part of one's psyche, at least in theory. Erasing it is not possible. However, a theory may be proposed in which there is no mention of the ego. If we erase the ego from a person I believe that they would be considered by definition as insane. That is, if you look at the meaning of the word 'ego' opposed to the idea that it is something that makes you feel superior and what not it is the word that is used to describe one's self, the way you feel personally separate to anyone'anything else, without ego you would not feel like someone, rather, you would have no boundaries with the rest of the world and you would live in it as light, water and the earth around you does with nothing to distinguish yourself from it. This is my understanding atleast using what I believe to be the correct definition of the word 'ego'.

Do all the life forms have an ego?

There is good amount of evidence to believe that all the life forms have ego. You can not have a life form without the feeling of ego. This ego gives you desire to preserve your self. This ego gives you desire to reproduce. These both factors forms basis of every life form. There is no evidence to believe that this ego is more or less in any species of animal, plant or microorganism. Probably same is true with the viruses also. There is no evidence to believe that this ego is more or less in any individual life form.

Where did the word ego originate from?

The word ego is the Latin form of the first person singular pronoun. It derives from the Indo-European root eg, which appears in English as I and in German as ichThe technical term ego came from Dr. Sigmund Freud as part of his theory concerning human behavior and repressed urges. His theory states that people have an id, ego, and super ego. The ego is part of the id and it represses infantile urges by the id. At a later stage the super ego develops out of the ego determining what is acceptable to the ego and what needs to be repressed. Repressions disappear from consciousness but live in the id. The job of the psychoanalysis is to uncover the repressions for what they are and to replace them by acts of judgement.
