Freud acknowledges the unconscious level of mental awareness. These trapped or repressed memories during childhood contribute to mental disorders. Ignoring them may hinder recovery, as they will continue to haunt the individual.

The royal road to the unconscious for Freud is through dreams. What did freud get right?

Freud posited a number of ideas that are either unfalsifiable (and therefore unscientific) or which have since been proven wrong. Nevertheless he is recognised as having come up with a number of correct ideas. For example, childhood experiences does have some impact on adult personality, particularly in instances of abuse. Also, many actions do appear to be due to subconscious processes, which Freud was the first to propose.

How is ignoring people a way to control them?

Ignoring people is the best way to control them because it takes away their power. In a normal relationship there must be a balance of power, that is why healthy relationships learn to negotiate, to discuss and to communicate. When you ignore someone you have all the power, its all in your court. If you are being ignored, you can't do anything, you have no power. Usually in a relationship you can restore a power balance by asking questions. Asking questions empowers you, that is, if they answer... What can you do if you are being ignored? Two things, first is tell your self its ok to feel powerless. At the end of the day, you're not the one with the problem and not knowing what is going on with the other person won't hurt you either, its ok to feel this way. Keep doing good to them, keep to believing in them, you may be the key to unlock what is going on in them that is locking them up. Either that or they are too busy, or they think your questions are stupid, or they don't like you. If it is any of these things is the case, sadly you can't change their response of immaturity. Your going to have to find ways to deal with this. It's a big world you will come across this at some stage. If you are a controller yourself you are definitely not going to like being ignored. Because you will feel out of control, again you need to tell yourself this is ok, perhaps seek some advice from a councillor.
