Jan Smuts was the president of South Africa when Ghandi organized South Asian workers to protest poor working conditions. The resulting strikes and uprisings were forcefully put down by the Smuts administration, which resulted in international condemnation. Contrary to the previous answer to this question, there were not millions of Hindu killed. Unfortunately there were some killed during the crackdown, but those numbered 20 some dead, not millions.
