Psychology as a scientific discipline differs from casual observations in that it requires scientific research to gather observations about a certain topic. Research Psychologists use the scientific method to design experiments to observe the topic at hand. The scientific method has six steps: form a hypothesis, determine how the research will be measured, develop a detailed procedure of how the experiment will be performed, gather participants who are applicable to the study, observe and analyze the data that was gathered during the experiment, and conclude what the findings were in the experiment.(according to Psychology 6th edition) Psychology would not be where it is today, if researchers did not perform scientific experiments and other research techniques. It is not possible for a psychologist to begin to fully understand one's mind and behaviors with out some sort of a scientific research.

Despite this, Psychology as a scientific discipline is similar to casual observations that we make about every day life. When a research Psychologist performs an experiment, as described in the one of the last steps to the scientific method, they compare the observations obtained in their experiment to casual observations in everyday life. One of the main goals of a research Psychologist is to better understand why people behave a certain way.

How does the APA define psychology?

The APA defines psychology as: Psychology is a diverse discipline, grounded in science, but with nearly boundless applications in everyday life. Some psychologists do basic research, developing theories and testing them through carefully honed research methods involving observation, experimentation and analysis. Other psychologists apply the discipline's scientific knowledge to help people, organizations and communities function better. As psychological research yields new information, whether it's improved interventions to treat depression or how humans interact with machines, these findings become part of the discipline's body of knowledge and are applied in work with patients and clients, in schools, in corporate settings, within the judicial system, even in professional sports. Psychology is a doctoral-level profession. Psychologists study both normal and abnormal functioning and treat patients with mental and emotional problems. They also study and encourage behaviors that build wellness and emotional resilience. Today, as the link between mind and body is well-recognized, more and more psychologists are teaming with other healthcare providers to provide whole-person healthcare for patients.

What is the difference between applied psychology and psychology?

Research psychology mainly works to find out the reasons about a certain behavior whereas applied psychology works to solve a problem or disorder may be by using the facts obtained from the research psychology. An example of research psychology will be chemicals of brain involved in memory and an example of applied psychology will be reduction of depression or use of therapy to treat certain kind of diseases.

How can you apply psychology?

Well, you can apply elements of psychology in everyday life, e.g. emotional intelligence is useful when dealing with people, cognitive psychology helps to understand how human memory works so it gives you an inead on how to improve your memory; if you read through some recent studies in psychology (e.g. on the British Psychological Society website) you'd find out for yourself: psychologists research what affects prosocial behaviour in children (application: when your own children you'll know how to help them develop prosocial behaviour), how temperature affects our perception...not to mention that psychological therapies can be used to help people with, for instance, mental disorders. The list is endless! Psychology is very applicable subject.

How does psychology as a scientific discipline differ from the casual observations you make about the world in everyday life?

Psychologists do make casual observations just as we all do, but they also conduct careful scientific experiments in order to discover things that would not be apparent on the basis of casual observation, and they study existing bodies of research and devote more thought to psychological issues than we do in our everyday life.

How to apply social psychology in everyday life?

It is perhaps so that people do indeed apply social psychology to everyday life. We are not even aware of it. Though however that social psychology may be a subject of everyday life, everyday life is not a subject of social psychology. You must put it in its place for many aspects of human behavior and nature may be within the study of social psychology. Thoughts emotions spirituality feelings behavior are human measures or variables of social psychology. Life will not stop for this and the world will not stop turning. Maybe social psychology is simply a separate perception, study and knowledge but is not where we are headed for.
