If children never went to school, how would cognitive development occur?
cognitive development includes situational awareness whereby as our brains develop we learn to focus on what we want to see and ignore (essentially not see) the things we don't want to focus on.
Dealing with a person who has brain damage or living with this condition is not the easiest situation in life. While some aspects of this transition will never change, cognitive therapy is proving that their is hope. Aside from the challenges of caregivers, there are many areas of personal development a person with brain damage can expect to accomplish over the course of the first few years after the injury occurred. However, when cognitive therapy is underutilized, the aftermath can mean that healing and personal development after brain damage injury is not easy to accomplish.
Society. Piaget emphasized the stages of learning, including the factors of brain growth. Vygotsky emphasized the need for societal interaction on development, especially during "critical periods", which was a large criticism of Piaget. Vygotsky claimed that after a certain point, learning relies on societal examples, otherwise we never get past basics. A perfect example is the "Geanie" case, of a girl who's father kept her shut in a room, tied in a crib or on a potty chair, until she was 13 years old. She had no ability for speech, and many things we see as basic fact she had no understanding of.
The movie never specifically says, but in the scene where his mother is meeting with the principal of his school, he shows her a chart and indicating that Forrest is 10-20 points below the average mark. so about 70 to 80.
Children consider their own wants and needs to the exclusion of the wants and needs of others as do criminals. My experience is that some humans develop consideration of others at a young age, others never do.
