My experience has been that to some degree it is. Depression can be caused by a a chemical imbalance, and these imbalances can be passed from parent to child. You can also 'inherit' depression by imitating your parents' reactions to the things that make them depressed. So you can inherit your parents' habits. While one can inherit a chemical imbalance, you won't necessarily become depressed because nothing may trigger those things you have inherited. Also, you may be generally more happy and hopeful than your parents, or better at controlling your thoughts and feelings.

There is a lot more than chemical imbalance and heredity that can cause depression. For example, temperament, stress, death, sadness, noise, etc. So if you are depressed, it is not necessarily due to your parents.

My source is my life.
