to have a good self-esteem, it is quite simple, you respect your body and your own thoughts, be kind to others, do what you can for others , so if you think well of yourself in a modest way it will show in your mannerism, people around you will notice that and respect you for it as well.

Low self-esteem is almost always rooted in childhood, and is usually caused by parents who expect more from children than they are prepared to give.

A good example might be the child who shows her father a drawing of which she is particularly proud and, rather than getting praise, is criticized for not doing it better. Over time, this lack of nurturing by a parent will produce a child with low self-esteem and an overpowering desire to finally please her father or another male. This always spells trouble in relationships.

That is only one example, but you can easily imagine others. The roots are in those situations where people are allowed to know that, despite all their efforts, they just - don't - measure - up.

  • Self esteem is essential for most humans and some can motivate that self esteem in themselves, but many need a good pat on the back for a job well done to keep motivating them through life. Example: If you are working and doing a good job and no one bothers to tell you that you are or have done a good job and this happens over and over again this can lessen self esteem in a person, yet some other people realize in themselves they have done a good job and are happy within themselves even without the pat on the back. If one has self esteem they generally will go further in many aspects of their personal life to employment.

There are lots of models of self-esteem but the majority look at you feelings of self-worth through two dimensions.

The first is how competent you feel about being able to live life - at work, with friends, in sports etc. If you don't feel you have this competence you need to start building it a little bit at a time. Plus make sure you ask your friends how they see you. Often you will think you are worse at something than the people around you.

The second dimension is called self-worth this is about whether you feel valued and respected by others and how much respect you have for yourself. Here you should sit and reflect on all the things that are good about you.

There is an assumption in the question that you have to develop your self-esteem. But that may not be right. There is quite a bit of evidence to say those with lower self-esteem are just cautious and those with high self-esteem can be quite nasty.

Your identity and self esteem are ultimately up to you. They are how you feel about yourself, but if you are influenced by others, what they think about you can have just as much affect.
