Cannons at sea usually killed people by shrapnel rather than anyone being hit by a cannon ball. Many designs of cannon were specifically made to fire just about anything from a muzzle of one. Frequently flint metal scraps and grapeshot were used to "Sweep the decks" of sailing ships in the 15th to 18th century. On land, cannon shot was usually designed to fragment or explode and again grapeshot would have been used on the field to great effect.

Bear in mind during the period when the cannon was used there were no antibiotics or worse still no painkillers and infection simply was not understood. If you got even the smallest cut, it had the potential to become infected and through that, kill you. If you were lucky a surgeon may be able to cut off a damage limb before infection set in. Therefore there was great interest in disabling as many men as possible in the smallest amount of ammunition.
