A rule of capitalization is to capitalize all proper nouns. Obviously, an academic who spelled his or her name in all lower case letters is engaged in 'breaking the rules.' Such a person may have one or more esoteric reasons for doing so, but at the root of it all is often just the satisfying of a subconscious need to be noticed solely through the act of being different, rather than satisfying that need through the accomplishment of some worthwhile goal.
