Self-reliant means the same thing as independant, so yes. If someone is self reliant then they rely on only themselves, and our independant.

If a person thinks they are funny when they are really not, I would call that person a failed comedian, and possibly a fool. Or maybe the person lacks self confidence and that's the only way he know to bring attention to himself.

One way to know: think about how you act when you're attracted to someone! Typically, we look for reasons -- even pretty slim ones -- to be around the person we're attracted to.
