Personification is important for a few reasons. It is a form of figurative language, and as such, it can enhance a novel, short story, or poem (it's used most frequently in poetry). Personification gives human qualities to inanimate objects as a way of describing them, or adding emphasis to a particular feature or quality of that object that is important for the story.
