The above elements refer to the holistic view of health theory which is derived from the World Health Organization's holistic definition of health in 1946. More specifically it is the perspective of the health worker. A health worker is said to classify the health according to the individual and according to society:

According to the individual:

  • PHYSICAL HEALTH concerns the mechanistic function of the body
  • MENTAL HEALTH refers to the ability to think and reason clearly and coherently
  • EMOTIONAL HEALTH is the ability of an individual to recognise and express emotions. It also refers to a person's ability to adequately deal with stress, tension, depression and anxiety
  • SOCIAL HEALTH is the ability to form and maintain relationships with other people, including family
  • SPIRITUAL HEALTH is the recognition and application of moral and religious principles/beliefs
  • SEXUAL HEALTH is the acceptance and expression of one's sexuality
