Disappointments come in all sizes, shapes, and circumstances. But as well, HOW a person responds to events certainly defines it as "disappointment" -- or something else. For example, if your dad suddenly took ill and was admitted to the hospital--on the same day you had a State Track Meet-- any disappointment you might feel because he did not show up would be replaced with concern for him.

There are numerous events that people COULD feel were disappointments. Some events can have fleeting disappointment-- such as, your teacher did not pick you to do a special task. Some disappointment feelings last longer. However, as time goes on what WAS your "biggest disappointment" can be replaced by your "worst disappointment--ever!" In other words, disappointment feelings shift over time. They wax and wane. As you live, events you are exposed to may feel more costly. The more you risk, the stronger you might feel disappointed-- yet, even those can be replaced by something that feels worse.

Some common events that might end up feeling disappointing are:

  • You expected something from someone. But the person did not do whatever you expected. Maybe they did not even know you expected them to do it! (We ALL experience this.)
  • You feel one of your parents slighted you or hurt your feelings. Maybe they did not agree with you or see it your way. (We ALL experience this.)
  • A friend betrays you. This disappointment can hurt a long time. But you can also learn from it. For example, if you told this friend "everything" even all your bad thoughts, and the friend told others your private thoughts, maybe you'd learn to keep some things to yourself in the future. (We ALL experience this.)
  • A boyfriend / girlfriend / your crush does something that hurts you or you feel betrayed. Maybe they even laugh when they see your tears over this event. You have lost "the love of your life". (We ALL experience this.)
  • A spouse cheats on you, which is a huge betrayal. You get divorced. Later, you re-marry and you are happy. But... that old disappointment lingers, so you don't fully trust anyone. (MANY people have gone through this!)
  • And likely the worst thing that EVERYONE experiences is---- disappointing yourself. You said something wrong; you made the wrong choice; you betrayed someone you loved; you blame yourself because you think you caused a loved one or friend to hate you; you did a bad act; etc.

Regret and disappointment often go hand in hand. You learn to lower your expectations, not just about other people, but yourself too. Humans make mistakes--we all do. No one can guarantee to never hurt us. So... we must learn how to reduce disappointing others and disappointing ourselves.
