If you were absolutely certain you couldn't fail, whether or not you really tried, you probably would - in the end - not try at all. For a while you'd enjoy effortless success, but eventually you simply wouldn't bother.

For everyone trying to reach a goal, whether that be to finish the washing up or to attain a doctorate, it's the trying that brings the satisfaction. Attaining the goal is simply the personal or public affirmation that the goal has been reached.

If we didn't need to try, we wouldn't. This is why captive wild animals, especially in old-style zoos, become depressed, dispirited, neurotic, or simply fail to thrive and breed. Animals are designed to strive, and without the necessity to do so, the will to live fades.
