Best Answer

Ralph Underwager co-wrote two books, The Real World of Child Interrogations (1990) and Accusations of Child Sexual Abuse (1988). His work was heavily debated and was very controversial. His ideas have been contested in the scientific literature and in legal cases. His work concluded that most accusations of child sexual abuse stem from memories implanted by faulty clinical techniques rather than from sexual contact between children and adults. His books have not been well received in the medical and scientific press. He was the co-founder of the False Memory Syndrome Foundation. He was accused of making pro-pedophilic statements during an interview with the Dutch journal Paidika in 1991. He has been accused of harassing a researcher (Anna Salter) that questioned the accuracy of his legal testimony and research.

Why do you express your self?

Most people express themselves because they want to be themselves, and act normally around everyone without the worry of being judged. Most people like to be known as their own person. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, Imitation is suicide.

According to Emerson why should people trust themselves?

As a Transcendentalist, Ralph Waldo Emerson firmly believed in the merits of individualism and the power of intuition. In his essay, "Self-Reliance," he explains, To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men-that is genius. Moreover, Emerson holds that each individual is in possession of a genius unique to him, but it is a genius that can only be revealed when the individual has the fortitude to trust his own ideas, attitudes, and propensities despite pressures from society. For society is in a "conspiracy" against the individual and would have him follow conventional thought and conform. Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members.....Self-reliance is its aversion. Clearly, Emerson's mantra of "trust thyself" prevails throughout his essay. He states that in every great work of art people recognize their own rejected thoughts as they return to them "with a certain alienated majesty" now that they are in art. Thus, the existence and value attributed to the work of art teaches individuals that they must abide by their own spontaneous ideas--their "genius"--and not discard them, despite "the whole cry of voices on the other side," the disapproval of society. Emerson further urges, Whoso would be a man must be a non-conformist....Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind....Nothing can bring you peace but yourself [and] the triumph of your principles. Above all, individuals must believe in their powers of intuition and be themselves, trusting in their own genius, for to do so is to have integrity and peace.

Is an IQ of 124 good for a 14 year old?

IQ tests are weighted so that the average of the population will be 100. But, most IQ tests are meant for adults so you can add 10 points to your score if you are still in high school, 20 or middle school and 30 for elementary school, approx. So, that would mean that in the range from 0-200 (0= a rock, 200= the smartest person in the world) your logical thinking skills are better than about 67.5% of the population. Congrats! :)

The Stream of Consciousness: William James?

William James was an American psychologist and philosopher born January 11, 1842. James came from a family of intellectual brilliance as his sister was the diarist Alice James, his brother the novelist Henry James, and his father Henry James, Sr. was a well-connected theologian. Additionally, James's godfather was Ralph Waldo Emerson. Growing up, James suffered from multiple physical ailments including that of the back, eyes, skin, and stomach. Additionally he dealt with bouts of depression and contemplation of suicide. In June 1869 James finally achieved his medical degree from Harvard University after several interruptions due to his ailments and a short-lived expedition up the Amazon River. Although a certified medical doctor, James never practiced any sort of medicine. During one of his breaks from medical school, James traveled to Germany for a cure to his “soul sickness.” It was in Germany that James realized his true interests were in the fields of philosophy and psychology. It was in 1872 after much philosophical searching that James considered himself cured.Psyography: William JamesWilliam James on TruthInfluences and TeachingsJames spent the extent of his academic career as a professor of Harvard University varying between physiology, psychology, anatomy, and philosophy until his retirement in 1907. James was the first professor to teach a course in psychology at an American University in 1875. With the influence of James's teachings and writings including the notable Principles of Psychology, psychology courses, journals, and societies began to spread throughout the country. With his research on the human memory, James disproved the 2,000 year old belief that memorizing any material would improve the memory. Through his self-experiment, he proved this to be untrue. James's chief influences on the field of psychology include his theories on functionalism, the self, stream of thought, free will, the unconscious, and emotion. Even after his retirement, James continued to lecture and publish new theories.Influences and ContributionsWilliam James and FunctionalismTheoriesOnes of James's most renowned theories involved the complexity of the stream of conscious thought. He theorized that consciousness is not merely a thing but a process or a flow of thoughts. James saw the consciousness as an infinite parade of emotions, images, sensations, and ideas that appear without a person's awareness and then pass away. It is a continuous stream of experiences and the consciousness's most important function is selecting to which experiences to pay attention. However these streams are not random or chaotic, there is a connected manner of order. The last though is connected to the thought before by some common rationale. There is an overlap between present, past, and future experiences. The current experience is connected to the last few experiences by a fringe that is continuously trailing off. Just at the beginning of the next experiences are starting to show up in the consciousness. With this theory, James saw thinking as an automated and evolutionary process that does not require any independent “thinker.”Other Resources on William JamesThe Meaning of TruthMemories and StudiesThe Moral Equivalent of WarThe Principles of PsychologyTalks to TeachersEssays in Radical EmpiricismThe Dilemma of DeterminismThe Varieties of Religious ExperienceThe Stream of ConsciousnessThe Will to BelieveReflections of William's James Essays
