Contrary to popular opinion, rude people should not be ignored. They should be confronted about their behavior. I will intercede on behalf of the defenseless who are being bullied. There are only going to be REAL, meaningful consequences for rudeness when society as a whole rejects rude people. In particular, when people stop admiring and emulating people in popular culture who are rude as a matter of course, are petted and indulged for this behavior. For example, at a recent White House dinner, Sir Paul McCartney, when accepting an award, included a gratuitous insult to former President G. W. Bush. There was not only no negative reaction, he was applauded for his behavior. Sir Paul is certainly entitled to his opinion, but to insult a former president while being honored at the White House by the current president, well, this is poor manners to a high degree, and a blot on the escutcheon of British nobility as a whole. So there we are. Until civilized people everywhere will shun the rude, it is left to us few to bear the standard of good manners to all.
