In Finland, there are a few criminal organizations that could be called gangs, including the well-known international outlaw motorcycle clubs Hell's Angels and Bandidos. Humans are primates. One basic trait that we share with other primates is territorial behavior. Gangs are, at their core, social groups that feed on the needs of belonging and security of their members. Other groups threaten a gang's sense of belonging and security. A gang's "turf" is their claimed territory - an area that the gang controls. Intrusions on their sphere of control threaten their sense of security.
