The Twelve Steps do not prescribe a God of any organized religion. One can just believe in some organizing force in the Cosmos, or simply in the ability of the group to accomplish things together that the individuals have been unable to do on their own.

The important aspect is for the person to get over the idea that they themselves are some sort of "higher power." That sort of ego prevents acceptance of the need to change, and recovery from addiction is all about changing just about everything in the way we look at life and how we manage ours.

No one in the Program will criticize anyone who doesn't believe in a God, nor will they proselytize. This writer, being Buddhist, used to remain silent during the prayers, and over a number of years was never criticized for it, nor did anyone even comment. (He has since come to believe that this reticence was due to his own ego, and now recites the prayer with everyone else on the theory that it is part of the community of the program -- even though he personally does not believe in the religious aspect.)

The 12-step program often includes references to a higher power, and not necessarily a specific deity, because it is designed to support individuals in finding strength and guidance beyond themselves. This higher power can be interpreted in different ways, depending on an individual's beliefs, and serves as a source of support in the recovery process. It is a spiritual, rather than religious, aspect that encourages humility, self-reflection, and seeking help from something greater than oneself.
