Because much of it is made of or reinforced by a Roman invention - concrete (the most famous, extant example of which is the coffered dome of the Pantheon).

The Colosseum's durability can be attributed to its strong construction using materials like concrete and brick. Additionally, its iconic shape and historical significance have helped in its preservation and maintenance over the centuries. Conservation efforts and restoration work have also contributed to ensuring its longevity.

The Colosseum does not need to be kept standing. The peperino volcanic rock and the concrete with which it was built are very durable materials. The current restoration works are aimed at halting its deterioration which were due of the structure having been quarried for building materials in the middle Age and to modern pollution. Between 1993 and 2000, 20.6 million Euro were spent on restoring the Colosseum and a new restoration programme has been started. The understructure of the arena and the seating are the areas which are suffering the most.
