Take the 1 train from Penn Station/34th Street to 79th Street.

It's very easy. You don't have to make any transfers. You have two options, the 1-2-3 (the red line) and the A-C-E(the blue line).

On the 1-2-3:

1) Take the Uptown 1-2-3 from 34th Street (Penn Station) to 96th Street. In this case, it is preferable to take the 2or 3, instead of the 1. All three of these trains (the 1, the 2 and the 3) stop at 96th Street. However, the 2 and 3 are express trains, while the 1 is local. If you take the 2 or 3, there will be only three stops: 34th Street (Penn Station) ---> 42nd Street (Times Square) ---> 72nd Street ---> 96th Street. On the 1 train, there will be eight stops.

2) You will exit the subway at 96th Street and Broadway. Walk two blocks east to 96th and Columbus: Broadway ---> Amsterdam Avenue ---> Columbus Avenue.

On the A-C-E:

1) Take the Uptown C train from 34th Street (Penn Station) to 96th Street. DO NOT take the A or E trains. The A is an express train, and, unlike with the 1-2-3, 96th Street is NOT an express stop on the A-C-E. The A train will not stop at 96th Street, and the E train goes to Queens after 50th Street. So, you can only take the C.

2) You will exit the subway at 96th Street and Central Park West. Walk one block west to Columbus Avenue.

Well, it depends on whether you're going to East 96th Street or West 96th Street. If you're going to the West Side, then you can just take the Uptown C train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) or the Uptown 1, 2, or 3 trains (the 1-2-3, the red line) from Penn Station to 96th Street.

If you're going to the East Side, then you will need to take the Uptown C or the Uptown 1-2-3 ONE STOP, from Penn Station (West 34th Street) to Times Square (West 42nd Street). At the Times Square Station, transfer to the S shuttle train(color code grey) east across 42nd Street, from Times Square (West 42nd) to Grand Central Station (East 42nd). At Grand Central Station, transfer to the Uptown 6 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line) to 96th Street.

You can take the Downtown A-C-E (the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to Canal Street, or the Downtown 1 or 2 (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to Canal Street. Both of these stations are roughly equidistant from your destination, so just take the subway line that you see first (if you're on the east side of Penn Station, the red line will be closer, and if you're on the west side of Penn Station, the blue line will be closer).

On the A-C-E: take the Downtown A-C-E from 34th Street-Penn Station to Canal Street. All three of these trains (the A, the C and the E) stop at Canal Street, so it doesn't matter which one you take.

You will exit the subway on West Broadway, between Lispenard Street and Canal Street.

Walk half a block north to Canal Street, and make a left onto Canal. Walk one block west on Canal. Sixth Avenue will be the next intersection. Actually, you are going to reach the three-way intersection of Canal Street, 6th Avenue and Laight Street.

On the 1 or 2: take the Downtown 1 or 2 from 34th Street-Penn Station to Canal Street.

You will exit the subway on the corner of Canal and Varick Streets. Walk two blocks east on Canal to the three-way intersection of Canal Street, Laight Street and 6th Avenue. After you cross Varick, the next street will be Sullivan Street, and then the Canal-Laight-6th intersection.

Note that 6th Avenue is also called Avenue of the Americas.

It depends on whether you're going to West 112th Street or East 112th Street.

If it's West 112th Street, you can take the Uptown Ctrain (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to 110th Street-Cathedral Parkway, at the northwest corner of Central Park, which is the corner of 110th Street and 8th Avenue, aka Central Park North and Central Park West.

The portion of 8th Avenue that borders the park is called Central Park West, the portion of 110th Street that borders the park is called Central Park North, and the portion of 59th Street that borders the park is called Central Park South. However, for some reason, the portion of 5th Avenue that borders the park is not called Central Park East.

You can also take the Uptown 1 local train (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to 110th Street-Cathedral Parkway (at Broadway). This is a different station than the 110th Street-Cathedral Parkway Station on the C, located 4 blocks further west. This is ideal if you're going to the far west side (the Columbia University area).

If you're going to East 112th Street, you can take the Uptown 2 or 3 express trains, from 34th Street-Penn Station to 110th Street-Central Park North (at Lenox Avenue). This station is located 1 block west of 5th Avenue, which is the dividing line between the West and East Sides.

You'll have a bit of a walk from the station, especially if you're going very far east, like, 2nd, 1st, York or East End Avenues. But it'll be a very fast and simple trip: no transfers, and only 4 stops from Penn Station: 34th Street-Penn Station ---> 42nd Street-Times Square ---> 72nd Street ---> 96th Street ---> 110th Street-Central Park North.

If you really would prefer a shorter walk, and you don't mind transferring, then, you can take the Uptown E train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to Lexington Avenue-53rd Street. This station is connected to the 51st Street Station on the 6 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line), so you can transfer without exiting the subway system.

Take the Uptown 6 from 51st Street to 110th Street (at Lexington Avenue).

Take the Downtown 6 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green subway line) from 96th Street (at Lexington) to 51st Street. This station is connected to the Lexington Avenue-53rd Street station on the E train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) and M train (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line).

Transfer to the Lexington Avenue-53rd Street station, and take the Downtown E train to 34th Street-Penn Station.
