Below the Line Advertising refers to marketing activities that target specific groups rather than a mass audience. It includes direct communication methods like events, email marketing, outdoor branding, and point-of-sale promotions. Unlike television or radio ads, below the line advertising focuses on building personal connections and measurable engagement.
what is Below-the-line-advertising?
There is above the line or mass advertising (tv, print, radio, newspaper, billboard). There is also below the line advertising (retail, coupons, direct mail, exhibitions) Then of course you have guerrilla advertising, also known as alternative advertising, ambient advertising, viral, or non-conventional. A lot of the time some advertising mixes above and below the line advertising. Today guerrilla advertising is becoming pretty popular. Check out www.guerrillaadvertising.ca for some cool examples.
A subscript is something written below the line.
I think you mean "below the line" and "above the line" advertising. Ad agencies used to get paid on a media commission for placing ads (above the line in accounting terms) and other forms of advertising, which included targeting customers or segments with collateral or direct response, fell below the line, since they were non-commission. Today those categories are not really relevant, especially with the advent of digital/internet advertising. So, you might say today that there is image advertising, for example commercials running during the Super Bowl; and then there is targeted advertising, which you see in direct response and internet advertising, which targets a need of a particular customer or market segment.
In advertising the abbreviated term BTL stands for Below the Line. It is a more targeted form of advertising using mailing lists more than more general TV and media adverts.
Above the line advertising are the promotional activities carried out through mass media such as radio, television and news papers. Below the line advertisement is a technique that uses less conventional methods than the usual specific channels of advertising to promote products, services, etc. These may include activities such as direct mail, public relations and sales promotion.

Is it possible that extension line is meant?
i think it is one form of advertising pointing to another form of advertising there by crossing the line...for eg:- a radio promo pointing to an instore activity...this is what i could understand from wikipedia....
