Ishmael is a gorilla, who over the course of few centuries had learned to speak to people telepathically. In the book, Ishmael mentors an idealistic but somewhat dense writer that has been looking for a teacher all his life. Throughout the book, Ishmael helps the writer understand how the majority of humankind is enacting a story that will eventually destroy the world. The main idea of the book is that our society is created on a myth. The myth is so integrated into our society that we can't see beyond the fairy tale we created. Ishmael explains that no one could point out the difference between the myth and reality, that humans are already deeply rooted in the myth that all they could do is make it worse.
