According to The OWL at Purdue:

"Personal Communication: For interviews, letters, e-mails, and other person-to-person communication, cite the communicators name, the fact that it was personal communication, and the date of the communication. Do not include personal communication in the reference list.

A. P. Smith also claimed that many of her students had difficulties with APA style (personal communication, November 3, 2002).".

When citing an email in APA format, include the sender's name, date of the email, subject line in italics, "Email message" in square brackets, and the retrieval information if it was not a personal communication. In MLA format, include the sender's name, email subject line in quotation marks, recipient name if known, email date, "Email" in the title of container 1, and the publication date in container 2.
