Whether the gestational age appears on the ultrasound is simply a matter of how the sonographer set the machine settings. It has no other significance.

Is your pregnancy normal if the ultrasound scan reveals you are 5 weeks pregnant with the gestational sac and yolk sac minus fetal pole but based on your last menstrual period you ought to be 9 weeks?

There are two answers to this - one good and one bad. The most probable answer is that you miscalculated and you are actually 5 weeks pregnant. Unfortunately there is a possibility that you did fall pregnant 9 weeks ago and that the pregnancy will not progress. It is possible that either the fetus is not developing, or that the fetus has died which usually means the gestational sac will shrink and appear to be not as advanced as you are.

What does it mean during pregnancy when you have a ultrasound and they can see a sack but do not see the baby?

It can be one of two things either you are not far enough along for the baby to appear on ultrasound or you have miscarried, which in that case you would have been made aware of when they did the ultrasound.

Can doctor see anything in first month of pregnancy with ultrasound?

Yes they can it's very small and looks nothing like a baby and usually an internal ultrasound is perormed. This is a small pole that they insert into your vagina as it's easier to see from there as the pregnancy is actually very tiny wht's shown will appear on the screen but I doubt you'd be able to make anything out unless you knew what you were looking for. Due to the small size of the pregnancy it's unlikley a doctor would want to do an ultrasound at this stage unless it was to determine absoloutely that you were pregnant in the first place, which is unlikley as there are other ways of telling. When you go in for an ultrasound, what is the purpose of the gel that they use?

The gel that is used during an ultrasound helps the technician run the machine over the body. This provides a slick surface for the machine. The gel helps to move the ultrasound around easily. It also makes the pictures that appear on the screen clearer because the ultrasound pointer is not getting stuck on the skin.

Pregnancy ultrasound?

DefinitionA pregnancy ultrasound is an imaging test that uses sound waves to see how a baby is developing in the womb. It is also used to check the female pelvic organs during pregnancy.Alternative NamesPregnancy sonogram; Obstetric ultrasonography; Obstetric sonogram; Ultrasound - pregnancyHow the test is performedYou will lie down for the procedure. The person performing the test places a clear, water-based gel on your belly and pelvis area and then moves a hand-held probe over the area. The gel helps the probe transmit sound waves. These waves bounce off the body structures, including the developing baby, to create a picture on the ultrasound machine. In some cases, a pregnancy ultrasound may be done by placing the probe into the vagina. For information on this procedure, see transvaginal ultrasound. How to prepare for the testA full bladder is necessary to get a good picture. Therefore, you may be asked to drink 2 to 3 glasses of liquid an hour before the test. You should not urinate before the procedure. How the test will feelThere may be some discomfort from pressure on the full bladder. The conducting gel may feel slightly cold and wet. You will not feel the ultrasound waves. Why the test is performedSome doctors order an ultrasound when they think there may be a problem with the pregnancy or if there is a question about how far along the pregnancy is. Others advocate screening ultrasounds. You should consult your health care provider to determine the most appropriate scanning schedule for you.A pregnancy ultrasound may be done in the first trimester to:Confirm a normal pregnancyDetermine the baby's ageLook for problems, such as ectopic pregnancies or the chances for a miscarriageDetermine the baby's heart rateLook for multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.)Identify problems of the placenta, uterus, cervix, and ovariesA pregnancy ultrasound may also be done in the second and third trimesters to:Determine the baby's age, growth, position, and sometimes genderIdentify any developmental problemsLook for multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.)Look at the placenta, amniotic fluid, and pelvisSome centers are now performing a pregnancy ultrasound around 9-13 weeks of pregnancy to look for signs of Down syndrome or other developmental problems in the developing baby. This test is often combined with blood tests to improve the accuracy of results. The total number of scans will depend on whether a previous scan or blood test has detected problems that require follow-up testing.Normal ValuesThe developing baby, placenta, amniotic fluid, and surrounding structures are normal in appearance and appropriate for the gestational age.Note: Normal results may vary slightly. Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results. What abnormal results meanAbnormal ultrasound results may be due to some of the following conditions:Birth defectsEctopic pregnancyIntrauterine growth restrictionMultiple pregnanciesMiscarriageProblems with the baby's position in the wombProblems with the placenta, including placenta previa and placental abruptionToo little amniotic fluidToo much amniotic fluid ( polyhydramnios)Tumors of pregnancy, including gestational trophoblastic diseaseOther problems with the ovaries, uterus, and remaining pelvic structuresWhat the risks areCurrent ultrasound techniques appear to be safe and there is no documented risk to women or their developing babies. Ultrasound does not involve radiation, such as that used when taking an x-ray.ReferencesRichards DS. Ultrasound for pregnancy dating, growth, and the diagnosis of fetal malformations.
