David is only nine years old, but he has gone through tragedies most people do not encounter until they are a grown adult. His mother died in a freak accident when a janitor didn't mark a wet floor clearly. She fell down the stairs head first, and never woke up. The two had made plans to watch the sunrise the next morning, but he never got to do it. David has sworn to himself to never watch a sunrise again. He also planned to never break a rule again; he believes that if he does so, somehow his mother will come back to him.Primrose is thirteen and has already moved out of her mother's house. She lives in an old, beat up van in the driveway of her crazy fortuneteller mother's house. Primrose's father vanished long ago, and she has no evidence of who he may be and while her mother is telling everybody of the long and happy life ahead of them, she is doing nothing to help Primrose's life to be happy at all.David sees Primrose when he is at a neighborhood Easter egg hunt and notices a body lying in the leaves, she is pretending to be dead. He then runs away after telling her about his mother even though she is giving him no response at all. After seeing Primrose yet another time in the library a little while later, the two are drawn to each other. They quickly become friends, regularly sneaking out at night to go trash digging to sell the items second hand, and generally ignoring their guardians. The two befriend a mechanic down the street named Refrigerator John. They often stay at his house fighting over what television program to watch, or stopping there after going to Dunkin' Doughnuts in the middle of the night. Primrose and David fight very often and many times get very offended by jokes from one another. After a fight between the pair about David's mother, they spent months with no contact. Until one day when David woke with a note on his chest saying, meet me at my place now! It was from Primrose. Only minutes later David was on his bike. He wondered, is this just another trick? But he refused to stop pedaling. When he arrived at Primrose's van, all she told him was to follow him. David did not know where he was headed to or why until he finally asked Primrose enough times and she said they were going to Philadelphia. David had only seen the city in pictures, and didn't see the point in going but he continued to walk. Along the journey on the railroad tracks, even though David and Primrose seem to bother one another, they opened up and told each other their secrets that no other person had ever heard. The strange acts of kindness they showed one another brought them closer than either had ever been to anyone. They understood each other and helped one another through the night. In the morning, David woke up to Primrose yanking him out of bed. Once again, he was told to follow him. He soon realized the sun was beginning to rise. David screamed. He knew he couldn't see the sunrise, and Primrose knew it too. As he covered his eyes, Primrose took his hand and led them to the spot. Even though Primrose didn't force him to do anything, David had his eyes open, looking straight towards the beautiful sun rising over the sky scrapers. Hand in hand, the two watched the sunrise knowing they would be there for each other always.
