MLA is Modern Language Association, the most common style used for writing papers in college. Depending on your major you might be asked to turn in a paper in ML! Format, APA (American Psychological Association) format, etc. I purchased an ML! Handbook, then an APA, my first year or college and both were well worth the money. They clearly define how to physically format the paper as well as how to cite, annotate, etc, and will save you a lot of time and aggravation.
