The Britannica has the reputation of being one of the most well-researched and written encyclopedias of the era when encyclopedias weren't online wikis. The Americana, although not a poor reference, is certainly a lesser work. Although the Americana does have a slant towards coverage of American topics, it actually is no more biased than any other American encyclopedia of its day.

Hardbound (vis-a-vis paperback) is the encyclopedia that you buy that you hand-handle, the one that the salesman brings to your door, you order, you pay for, and it's delivered to you. It'll be out of date soon enough; information is multiplying at a fantastic rate these days - why buy a hard copy when you can get the updated verson (versions) on your computer?
