Elsa, from the book and movie "Born Free," is one of the most famous lionesses. She was raised by Joy Adamson and released back into the wild.
The song "Born Free" was inspired by Joy Adamson's book of the same name. Born Free tells the true story of Elsa the lioness (who was born in captivity) and the effort to successfully return her to the wild.A movie based on the book came out in 1966, with the theme sung by Matt Monro. Williams' version was released the following year.
The novel "Forever Free : Elsa's Pride" (1962) was adapted as the feature film "Living Free" (1972), a sequel to 1966's award-winning movie "Born Free". (Confusingly, the movie took its title from the third book of the Elsa series, not the fourth.)
