The person you are in love with. You might look at other people, and think they have sexy bodies - you might even think about what they would look like naked - but if you are in love, your lover is always the sexiest person alive. Why Are Teens So Obsessed With Who is "Hot"? When you hit puberty, you have your first experience with hormones. Hormones are the chemicals that drive body processes like sex, so teenagers get obsessed with sex. They think about sex, popularity, and relationships most of the time because the body is designed to have an instinct to mate and produce children. The only problem with this is that our modern society has reached the point where we do not have to get married and start a family by age 14 (yes, that's how old most newlyweds were several hundred years ago). This makes the teenager's life even more confusing that it already is, since the hormones are saying "You need to have sex NOW!" and the brain is saying "You need to wait until you get a good job and find the perfect mate!" Part of this process is trying to find out what is "normal." Teenagers ask others for their opinion - "who do you think is hot?" or "who do you think loves me?" - finding out how other people think helps a teenager decide what is "normal" and what is "weird" (though both of those are only gradations on a huge scale!). This explains the huge "poll" questions like "who is the hottest?" and "who else likes ____?" What About All Those Teen Idols?Young women, especially, are trying on different roles, experimenting with what they will be like as an adult. They spend a lot of time trying out different physical styles - hair, make-up, clothing - and spend just as much time trying out different social situations - what boys are "hot," who "loves" them, who they might marry, what a relationship might be like. Women think and communicate more in the emotional area of the brain than men do, and thus worry about things like love, popularity, status, and friends - whereas men think more along the lines of how they can achieve a goal (like getting a girlfriend or boyfriend, getting some make-out time, getting some sex). Does Popularity Matter? Not a bit - popularity is something that is totally optional. If you are a politician or a celebrity, then you'd want to be more popular, but for most of us, being "the hottest," "the coolest," or "the sexiest" isn't at all important. The majority of us will have some close friends who think we're great, and some acquaintances who think we're OK, and some people who don't like us - and that's the way the world is supposed to work.
