The founder and leader of the Mormons, Joseph Smith, was escaping from a jail facility in Carthage, Illinois, when he was shot and killed on June 27, 1844. He was imprisoned on charges related to the destruction of a printing press and inciting a riot. Smith and his brother Hyrum were attacked by a mob while they were incarcerated, leading to their deaths.
Nothing happened to the Mormons, they are still surviving and thriving as a 14 million member worldwide church. Brigham Young was their second leader, he moved Church headquarters to Utah in 1847, and it has been located there ever since.
