The Illuminati was an organization (1776-1785) of enlightened intellectuals whose goal was the overthrow of the oppressive monarchy controlled by the church in Rome. They were very unsuccessful in their endeavor because that monarch successfully destroyed the organization and imprisoned their leadership.

Some like to pretend otherwise, as it is more fun to pretend the reason you are not successful is that you are opposed by a huge unfightable conspiracy.

The thing that most Illuminati believers don't consider is the Illuminati were the intellectual elite, not the financially successful.
