Steeples are typically christian.

The steeple most likely originates from the obelisks or pillars familiar in pagan practice, dating right the way back to the Egyptians who built them in honour of the sun God Amon re.

At the time when Christianity was just coming to power, the only artisans/craftsman around to build the early churches were pagans. The Christians would hire these artisans to build these churches that they would later force the pagans to go to. The pagans being the smart people they were, knew this and would inscribe hidden images of their pagan deities in the ornately decorated churches. I cannot say with any degree of certainly about the steeples specifically having any association to paganism.
