Freemasonry does indeed accept practicing Roman Catholics for membership. However, the Catholic Church has prohibitions against joining secret societies, including the Free Masons. The Knights of Columbus are a similar organization that is open to practicing Catholics.

It should be noted however that the Catholic Congregation For The Doctrine of the Faith published a document on 26 November 1983 which stated that "The faithful who enroll in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion." . This document was signed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who is currently Pope Benedict XVI.

How do you join in Tanzania?

It is a common misconception that in Freemasonary you are asked to join, you don't volunteer. In fact, you can only join a Masonic lodge if you do volunteer. But you will have to locate someone to ask. In Tanzania there is St. Andrew's Lodge under the Scottish Constitution, and a number of Lodges under the English Constitution, all in Dar. And also there are lodges in Tanga, Moshi and Arusha. Be aware that membership is not automatic, and the Lodge may reject your application for membership. With some Lodges, an interested person must show continued interest even after being rebuffed before he is accepted.
