Yes, tragically many do. it is called being ( Released from Vows) and the ex-nun is then formally secularized. it amounts to an honorable discharge, they cannot rejoin any relilgious order, obviously, many ex-nuns go into allied professions- such as teaching or nursing, which were the missions or apostolates (vocational tasks) of the orders involved. there are no unassigned or independent nuns, all belong to some order or congregation and most are in either the teaching ( including catechists- Sunday school) or the Health care- such as Nursing Nuns) apostolates. The phrase apostolate is for some reason not applied to special occupation roles of Priests- there are , of course, priests in the teaching orders, such as the Jesuits, but they normally do not use the term (Apostolate).
