In this statement, Jesus once again repeats a frequently-used teaching: Do not worry. Do not be influenced by the ways of the world that make you feel inadequate or second-class.

Jesus spoke out to the poor and oppressed people of the times - these poor people were often wonderful people, loved God and led good lives, but were made to feel totally inadequate by the rich, who paraded in fine clothes and showed off their wealth.

In comparing these people to the lilies of the field, Jesus made it plain that the lilies did not worry about clothes or fine riches, and yet they were more beautiful than even the richest man the Jews could think of - King Solomon in all his glory. Jesus then went on to comment - if God looks after the lilies and gives them beauty, then how much more beautiful are we who are made in God's image.

This teaching is as much relevant today as it was then. When we look at celebrities who have had thousands of pounds'/dollars' worth of cosmetic surgery to make them look 'beautiful' the result is a grotesque parody of what they were before. I will mention no names but one can think of a recently deceased pop star, and an ageing American comedienne to get the picture. Yet, looking into the shrivelled and worn face of someone like Mother Theresa of Calcutta, one can see a hidden beauty that is far more profound than any cosmetic surgery could ever produce as it reflects the love of God and Holy Spirit dwelling in that person. So, Jesus teaches us not to feel inadequate about ourselves, to trust God to look after us, and to search for hidden beauty rather than superficial flippand transient beauty that costs fortunes - money which could be better used to fed the poor.
