It would have been incredibly difficult for an army of some 600,000 fighting men, plus priests and all their families to communicate effectively over an area of several thousand square miles. With no telephones, and under close Egyptian supervision, they had to coordinate their departure, with all their possessions and livestock, so that they assembled at a single point on one night and left Egypt before the Egyptians were even aware what was happening. Even today, with modern radio and telephone communications, this would be a feat of unprecedented proportions. Some would say that in ancient times, this level of communication and close coordination was impossible.
