AnswerAccording to 2 Kings 2:11, Elijah went up to heaven in a chariot of fire, drawn by horses of fire. This seems so preposterous that it is understandable that some should ask whether he was really taken away in some sort of spaceship. The truth is both even more surprising and at the same time more down to earth.

Throughout the ancient Near East, it was common to believe that the sun god was drawn across the heavens in a fiery chariot. Many religions even kept chariots and horses in a temple, just in case the sun god needed them. So, would it be surprising to find that the kings of Judah kept horses dedicated to the sun and there were chariots for the sun until they were removed from the Temple by King Josiah as inimical to monotheism (2 Kings 23:11)?

The story of Elijah may have evolved over the centuries, but it seems that in very early times, he was a sun god.
