However, the consensus of historians and scholars is that the biblical conquest of Canaan never really happened. It is now understood that the Israelites were actually descended from Canaanites, not invaders who had fled from Egypt. Long after they had forgotten their real origins, the people developed their traditions of a glorious past, so different from the reality of their own time.
