Did the middle age monks make money?

Monks pretty much all took vows of poverty. The ones who lived in monasteries did not earn money, and did not need it. Those who did not live in monasteries begged, but usually for food or whatever else they might have needed.

In theory, the monasteries were largely dependent on donations.

In practice, land owners without heirs often left land to monasteries, and so the monasteries often owned extensive properties, complete with rental income on the land and without taxes. This made them very powerful, and it also often made kings resent them.

Monasteries also had monks and nuns make things and sell them. The thing we hear about most today is books, which were very expensive and a source of good income. They also included medicines, however, and a number of other things such as wine and cheese.
