Sir Thomas More indirectly criticised the Church early in his writing career, with the publication of Utopia, a book that compared the society in which he lived with a Utopian society in which there was religious liberty. However, he was a staunch Catholic and never really criticised the Church, becoming in later life a persecutor of those he considered heretics.
He was harshly critical of Protestants and devoted an entire chapter of the Dialogue showing that it was lawful, necessary and beneficial to burn heretics, and that the imposition of this punishment was due not to the clergy but to the prudent provision of the secular authorities. He was executed as a traitor in 1535 for refusing to swear an oath that would have signified his consent to England's disavowal of the papacy.
