A cathedral (French cathédrale from Lat. cathedra, "seat" from the Greek kathedra (καθέδρα), seat, bench, from kata "down" + hedra seat, base, chair) is a Christian church that contains the seat of a bishop.

The global Catholic Church is divided into diocese and each diocese is overseen by a Bishop. Therefor every diocese also has a Cathedral as the main church (or seat) for the Bishop.

In 2008 there were at least 2795 diocese across the globe, hence there are at least 2795 cathedrals in use today. There are actually more as the Anglican Church and other non-catholic churches also have Cathedral.

Obviously some cathedrals are more famous or more grand than other cathedrals, and many cathedrals are simple church buildings.

How can you use the word cathedrals in a sentence?

if you want to put the word cathedrals in a sentence, you would need to put it as an subject, such as "the cathedrals were lined up in a row, whilst the churches felt small compared the gargantuan cathedrals" and I've used the word cathedrals twice! Cathedrals are magnificent churches usually built on Gothic style. The most famous cathedral in the world which is a Paris's landmark along with the Eiffel Tower, is the Notre Dame Cathedral. Italy has great cathedrals as well.
