Jews are permitted by their religion to drink alcohol if they wish. Wine is an important sacrament in Jewish rituals (usually drunk in small amounts), although Grape Juice can be substituted for children or anyone who wishes to remain alcohol-free. The Jewish holiday of Purim has the custom whereby adults are "supposed to" get drunk. Because the holiday celebrates the victory (told in the biblical Book of Esther) over a plot against the Jewish people by the villain Haman by the hero Mordechai (along with his cousin Queen Esther), the custom says that you are supposed to get so drunk that you can't tell the difference between Haman and Mordechai (i.e., between the bad guys and the good guys).
