An atheist does not believe in a Hell or other afterlife. Assuming this opinion is correct, an atheist does not go to Heaven/Hell after death - and neither does anyone else.

Theists believe in an afterlife. Some (like Christians, Jews and Moslems) believe in a Heaven and Hell, others believe in a continuing series of rebirths leading to some sort of reward.

For theists that believe in a Heaven/Hell there is an imposing list of does and don'ts that the believer has to comply with to "succeed". Most Heavens are exclusive to their particular sect's beliefs. These groups would see the majority of the human race going to Hell, atheists included.

Atheists believe that no one has a soul. Therefore atheists do not believe that they, or anyone else, will go to heaven. Of course, Christians, Jews and Muslims would probably arrive at the same answer for different reasons - you can not go to heaven unless you believe in God.

The question is "can" atheists go to heaven, not "may". "May" would imply that someone would permit them in. The implication of "can" is equally that an atheist might reject the opportunity if it were presented. If there is a Christian style heaven, it would offer few attractions to the atheist - see Mark Twain's "Letters From the Earth" for a discussion of the shortfalls of that heaven. Twain's "Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven" offers a refreshing view of a heaven that would accept atheists (and any one or thing) else. The Moslem heaven of reclining on couches for eternity sounds a bit dull too. Perhaps the rollicking Norse heaven (even though it is relatively short term) would be acceptable. Assuming that such a place existed:

• Nobody knows the criteria for entry - every religion has different ones and many don't accept the validity of other religions criteria.
• Everyone is an atheist to someone's religion.
• Some god(s) have afterlives which would not appeal to many people
• Many atheists would not accept such an invitation as they see the god(s) as rather unpleasant and uncaring being(s)

If indeed there is a heaven meant for people who meet the qualifications, then many, many people will be surprised when they discover who gets in, and who does not. The more vocal and prideful the religious zealot, the bigger the surprise will be.

As a christian i can say that... NO atheists will NOT go to heaven. They chose not to except God and that's a sin. Im sorry to say but when judgment day comes... all the christians will come in a group and on contact go up to heaven. But the atheists... however, will stand before God and have to suffer the pain and crying they will be in... they will be scared as heck.... and you know what's worse? THEY HAVE TO STARE AT US IN HEAVEN WHEN THEY GO DOWN TO HELL AND HAVE TO LIVE AND SCREAM IN THERE FOREVER. And as christians we will be happy, no fear in heaven with the holyness and trust of God. And when were done in heaven... God will create a new and improved Earth. In The Bible it says we will have powers like forming into different things and i don't know what other powers we will have there but i do know that we will be there for 1000 years then we will go up to the NEW heaven that God has created. So im sorry atheists but if you don't change and except God before you die... well that's your problem.

As a christian, I believe that God is gracious and He reveals himself even in this world. Some people choose to reject him for various reasons. They choose to stay away from Him. Others, to the contrary, respond favorably to the evidence of His existence and want to be closer to God, to live in communion with Him.

According to Christian theology, in the eternal state, both categories of people will get their hearts' desires: those who seek God will get to be with Him forever in a new Creation called paradise, whereas those who don't want anything to do with Him will also get their hearts' desires by being separated from Him for eternity. Unfortunately, by rejecting God -- who is the source of all good things -- atheists choose distress and suffering, isolation and hopelessness (in other words, hell).

Ironically, this is one of the things that both Atheists and Believers generally agree upon; Atheists will not go to heaven. Christians and Muslims generally argue that because Atheists do not believe in God, they will not enter heaven and instead go to Hell. It is commonly described as the abode of an evil supernatural entity, a fiery underground place in which the dead continue to exist and suffer eternal punishment for sins committed during life.
