The stigmata are spontaneously appearing wounds that mimic the wounds of Christ. They can appear on various parts of the body, i.e. the palms, the side, the head (crown of thorns), etc. They bleed, often more so on certain religious occasions. They can be painful. The wounds don't get infected. Arthur C. Clarke produced a short, exceptionally thoughtful TV program on the subject: Arthur C. Clarke's World of Strange Powers: Stigmata - The Wounds of Christ.

The above program covers: (1) Recent Catholic and Protestant Christians who bore the stigmata, including, Padre Pio, the most famous recent stigmatist; (2) the variety of locations of the wounds and how they differ from the actual wound locations of Roman crucifixion; and (3) A young Baptist girl who gained some control over her stigmata by training in self-hypnosis. Clarke offers some unusual examples in medical history of the mind influencing the body in rather exceptional ways, e.g. healing of an incurable skin disease through hypnosis and the spontaneous appearance of rope burns on a man's arm mimicking a childhood trauma. Finally, he admits that the stigmata are real, perplexing, and that there is not an adequate medical explanation for the phenomena.
