Thunder is a result of the super heating of the atmosphere surrounding a lightning bolt.

Lightening can heat the air it passes through to over ten thousand degrees for just a split second, the rapid heating causes the air to expand very quickly then contract just as quickly. This causes a large pressure wave to ripple through the air. Your ears hear pressure waves in the air, The Loud bang you hear is the large pressure wave traveling through the air. The closer the lightening the louder the BANG.
