Does no one know when the world is coming to an end only God?

If there is a God then yes, only he/she/it would know when the world will end.

However, scientists have a good idea of when it might end - from their knowledge of the Sun and its activity.

Quite correct, but there are signs that we can look for that will assure us the time is at hand.

Jesus had said, while He was on earth, "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." Matthew 24:36. Obviously, at least in His earthly condition, Christ Himself did not know. He had willing relinquished certain abilities to become our Savior.

Later, when the disciples asked about the restoration of Israel, which is part of the end times and the destruction of the earth as we know it, Jesus was about to ascend to Heaven, "And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power." Acts 1:7.

Whereas the Scripture gives us some understanding about the end time events, to know that it might be soon, many have been wrong in thinking that the day was near, over many centuries. It seems, knowing the nature of man to procrastinate, that God designed the last days to be sufficiently mysterious, that we might better listen to Him to be on the alert: "Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come." Matthew 24:42. All of the last times events will be set in motion at that time.
