the prefix Mac, Mc means "son of" in Scottish usage

this is equivalent to the Jewish ben, as in ben-Yosef

the Irish also have a similar format and it's on the tip of my tongue

The tip o' yer tongue contains an 'O' short form of 'Of' so these prefaces mean the same really,

Mac (or/and 'Mc') Scottish gaelic shortening of 'make'

O' Irish Gaelic shortening of 'of'

true of the clan naming of almost all Celts. ;)
