More correctly, Genesis 1 through to 2:4a is a general outline of the whole creation and the rest deals with the creation of man and his position over creation and the relationship between man and woman.

Thus the detail which is in the second section deals with and enlarges upon the creation of man mentioned in a general sense in Genesis 1. This is in line with known ancient practice from other ancient writings. So, if one is trying to fit Genesis 2 into Genesis 1 it belongs in the part dealing with the creation of man.

It is hard to see where Genesis 2 would fit into Genesis 1-2:4a, since they seem to be quite different accounts. For example, in the first creation account, humans (both male and female) were created last of all, after the creation of all living creatures and all other creation. On the other hand, in Genesis 2:4bff, a man (Adam) was the first act of creation, followed by creation of all other living creatures, then a woman (Eve). The accounts are simply too different to harmonise.

Scholars have examined these texts and say that Genesis 1-2:4a must have originated in a maritime culture, while Genesis 2:4bff originated in an arid inland environment..
