In Greece, Ares was the God of War and Athena was the Patron of Warfare and Strategy. Ares was not widely worshiped in Greece outside of Sparta. You could say that Ares was the patron of soldiers while Athena the patron of generals.

In Rome, Mars was widely worshiped as he was one of the Patrons of the city (since legend states that the twins Romulus and Remus were sons of the deity).
