Mormon missionaries acquire language skills during their training through immersive language study programs, where they are taught by experienced language instructors and practice speaking with native speakers. They also use language learning materials and resources provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help them become proficient in the language of the country they will be serving in.
Missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) spend weeks or months in training before being sent to their assignments. Those learning a language typically train for 6-8 weeks, while those not learning a language train for 2-4 weeks. Training is done at one of 17 Missionary Training Centers (or MTC) worldwide, with the largest being in Provo, Utah near the Brigham Young University campus. While in training, the missionaries get used to missionary life and learn the rules that they must live by for the next 18-24 months. They also learn the culture, customs, and language of the area that they will be serving in. Of course, they also spend time studying scripture and learning how to effectively teach the basics of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Most of their training is done through 'Preach My Gospel', the guidebook for Mormon missionaries. Despite the lengthy training period, many missionaries feel they are not totally prepared once they arrive at their assignment. Teaching outside of the controlled environment of the MTC is daunting for most new missionaries. The first six weeks at their assignment they will receive hands on training with a more experienced companion. Check out the "Related Links" below to learn more about the MTC or to read 'Preach My Gospel', the Mormon Missionary guide.

Missionaries can literally go anywhere in the world. I don't believe that there is a country that has remained untouched by the missionaries. I have a friends in Denmark, Taiwan, Indonesia, and... Texas. If you don't know the language of the area, you are trained at the MTC, Missionaries Training Center, and learn whatever language(s) is/are native. It's unbelievable as to just how quickly they learn...
